Answer: Publication date: 21-04-2004
Title:   The Jewish faith in the messiah
Content:   Dear Aryeh,

From the Talmudic passage you cited (Sanhedrin 99a) Rabbi Yosef Elbo (1380-1444, Spain) concluded in his book HaIkarim (first essay, chapter 1) that faith in the messiah is not one of the fundamentals of faith. He writes, "There is no doubt in my heart that Rabbi Hillel did not believe in the messiah at all, yet he was not counted amongst the apostates, for belief in the coming of the messiah is not a fundamental of Moses' teaching."

Sincerely,

Daat Emet
